The Do’s and Don’ts of Septic Systems

March 24, 2022 Published by Leave your thoughts

A septic tank is an essential addition to your home. Like any other part of your homestead, your septic system needs proper care and upkeep to help maintain its structural integrity and functionality. The following are septic system do’s and don’ts.

Do Maintain Your Septic Tank

The key to increasing your septic tank’s longevity is to maintain it regularly. As a general rule of thumb, have your septic tank inspected at least once a year. Do gravity system and proprietary system inspections every year. Repair issues such as cracks and leaks as soon as you notice them. Hire a professional to conduct all septic tank tasks.

Don’t Overload Your Septic Tank

Although your septic tank is designed to handle waste materials, don’t overload it with hazardous waste. Don’t flush non-biodegradable materials like condoms, paper towels and diapers down your toilet. Also, avoid overwhelming it with chemicals like hygiene products and pharmaceuticals. This will protect your septic system from blocking or corroding.

Do Protect Your Drainfield

A drainfield is a shallow, covered ditch in which treated wastewater from your septic system flows through before seeping into the soil and entering the groundwater. Determine the exact location of your drainfield and protect it at all times. Grow grass in the area to avoid soil erosion and enhance evaporation. Get rid of any drains that may channel water into the drainfield. Ensure vehicles don’t drive over or park on your drainfield, as this could make it sink. Protect your structure by not constructing any structures over it.

Don’t Overwork Your Drain

Channeling water from your dishwasher, shower, washing machine and toilet simultaneously can put a strain on your septic system and damage it. Reduce the use of water sources in your home, primarily if your septic system is more than half full. Additionally, increase water efficiency in your home by repairing leaks and installing water-efficient appliances to reduce the amount of wastewater draining into your septic system.

Do Pump Your Tank

Be sure to pump your tank regularly. How often you pump depends on the size of your septic tank, the number of people in your household, the amount of waste you produce and other factors. As a general rule of thumb, pump your septic tank every three or five years or when necessary. Contact a licensed professional to pump your septic tank as needed.

Don’t Misuse Your Sink Drain

Your sink drain is connected to your septic system. Therefore, be careful with what you drain down your sink. Don’t wash flour, coffee grounds, grease or medication down your sink as they can easily block your system. Don’t scrape utensils in the sink. If you have to, buy a drain catcher to filter food particles from going through your sink’s drain.

Bottom Line

These are the septic tank do’s and don’ts that you should practice. They will help maintain your septic tank and increase its lifespan. Contact a reputable septic tank company if you need septic tank services or have any questions.
